Borrowings are the words that are adopted by the speakers of one language from another (source language). Borrowings are also called the loanwords. These words appear in the language in the result of cultural interconnections between the representatives of two different languages.   • During cultural contact the borrowings go in both languages. However, one of the languages borrows more words, what means that the other language is more powerful and rich. This can be referred to English. You should definitely mention in your English language coursework that most of the English adopted words are of Latin origins. However, English adopted the words from French, Arabic, Scandinavian, Celtic and some other languages.
  • There is another way of adopting the words from the other languages that you can describe in your English language coursework. It often happens that the speakers, who are borrowing another language, are quite knowledgeable of the source language. They are using different borrowed words in their native language to express thoughts better.

  • We have prepared some words that were adopted by English and that you can also use in your English language courseworks as examples. French: court, crime, prison, champagne, viscount, duke, duchess, adventure, battle. Latin: anatomy, capsule, physician, peninsula, orbit, notorious. Arabic: algebra, algorithm, azimuth, coffee, zero, sugar. Spanish: armada, desperado, mosquito, mustang, marijuana, canyon, guitar, cannibal, alligator.
