Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is driving further numerous spheres of human activities and industries. In healthcare, the relevance of AI is growing exponentially as more applications of the technology are being developed. AI combines conventional computer programs, computation, and intuition to make assumptions, review the model, and reevaluate the data at a scale and level of detail that is not achievable by humans (Reavie, 2018). AI and machine learning application in healthcare, particularly in nursing, is still relatively new (Garcia-Dia, 2019). Nevertheless, some of the possible uses of AI demonstrate potential for early application in healthcare. They aim to assist in fraud detection, surgery, virtual nursing, administrative activities, and others. Consequently, the presence of AI should be considered an opportunity for the sector that will enhance the care provided in medical institutions.

AI has the potential to manage expensive back-office issues and inefficiencies in the healthcare sector. Over half (51%) of a nurse’s and 16% of a physician’s workload are non-patient care tasks (Kalis et al., 2018). Voice-to-text transcription is an example of an AI-based technology that may streamline administrative processes in healthcare (Kalis et al., 2018). They will reduce time-consuming tasks that are not directly related to patient care, such as drafting chart notes, filling out prescriptions, and ordering testing (Kalis et al., 2018). According to estimates, these technologies might help the sector save $18 billion a year (Kalis et al., 2018). The AI implementation costs vary by the company’s needs but typically remain within the range of 20.000$ to 1.000.000$ (Luzniak, 2022). The AI assistance in remote healthcare and documentation are solutions attributable to the lower end of the spectrum. Therefore, these investments could be considered manageable by most health centres in the US.
