Introduction
The popularity of many social media accounts on Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms continues to grow, allowing influencers to endorse products, services, and ideas. These influencers have undeniably become integral to today’s digital world, shaping the youth’s opinions, preferences, and behaviors. Some argue that social media influencers predominantly negatively influence young people. However, this essay asserts that the impact combines positive and negative effects, with the balance relying on factors like the influencer’s content and the consumer’s critical thinking abilities.
The Dual Impact of Social Media Influencers on Youth
Social media influencers can positively impact the youth in numerous ways. For instance, they can serve as role models, motivating their audience to make fulfilling and healthy routine choices, achieve their goals, be passionate, and believe in themselves (Lawfluencers). According to Lajnef, “to reinforce their sense of belonging, teens are following influencers on social media” (2).
Knowing that a significant social media figure faces the same problem might make a young person feel less alone and more included and supported. Influencers’ posts and videos can persuade young people to make better life decisions and more informed choices (Lajnef 1; Lawfluencers). The ability of social media influencers to inspire, guide, and empower the youth is evident. Their significant role in shaping tomorrow’s future leaders and innovators highlights the importance of their influence.
Furthermore, social media influencers can use their platforms’ popularity to spread awareness about different concerns or problems. For instance, not all parents discuss the concepts of self-care with their children, and psychological and mental issues are still stigmatized. Therefore, influencers can significantly contribute to informing many users about these and other essential matters (Lawfluencers).
Social values, such as inclusion, equality, and diversity, can also be promoted on social media because users from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and cultures gain large audiences (Lawfluencers). These positive influences contribute to developing young people’s character, values, and perspectives. Influencers can encourage open conversations and challenge stigmas associated with sensitive subjects by sharing their experiences and struggles (Lawfluencers). This fosters a sense of empathy and understanding among young audiences. By actively advocating for these positive changes, social media influencers can be crucial in nurturing a more compassionate, open-minded, and well-rounded generation.
At the same time, one must consider social media influencers’ negative impacts. Unfortunately, teenagers’ self-esteem might decrease if they see a bright but fake picture of an influencer’s life, and unrealistic expectations will appear (Lawfluencers). Moreover, the harm may become even more physical because many prominent figures use their accounts to promote their unhealthy dieting choices, poor sleep patterns, and even addictions, making the youth follow their lead (Lawfluencers). Thus, addressing the negative consequences of social media influencers is crucial and requires a proactive approach.
It is also noticeable that many teenagers are constantly exposed to social media and develop a fear of missing out (FOMO). The latter refers to the need to compare themselves to the influencers they follow, which makes adolescents lonely and depressed (Lawfluencers). In addition, influencers become more authoritative for children and teenagers who believe in any fake news spread by their role models (Lajnef 2). This exposure to disinformation results in reduced skills of critical thinking, resource analysis, and distorted world perception.
Conclusion
In conclusion, social media influencers’ impact on children and adolescents is a complex mixture of ethical and immoral effects. It is pretty beneficial that these figures can encourage the youth to pursue their dreams, change for the better, get educated, and accept moral values. Unfortunately, influences also tend to spread fake news or harmful and unhealthy habits.
The balance between positive and negative impacts largely depends on the content shared by the influencer and the critical thinking skills of the young person consuming it. Therefore, adults must guide children in social media, helping them develop balanced, responsible, and critical attitudes when consuming online content. Taking such measures can help reduce the adverse effects of social media influencers. As a result, young individuals can reap the benefits of the positive aspects of these influencers’ impact.
