Effects of Excessive Social Media Use on Addiction, Mental Health, and Social Skills

Introduction

“Social media is training us to compare our lives, instead of appreciating everything we are. No wonder everyone is always depressed,” – Bill Murray.

Examining this quote, it is essential to ask the following question: Does the extensive use of social media harm individuals? The current generation has been using social media to the extent that they cannot concentrate on other work. One can find a student in class watching Instagram videos in the lecture hall instead of listening to what the lecturer is teaching.

The widespread use of social networking technologies has sparked debate about whether it harms individuals. With a rising number of people participating in social networking activities, there is a growing concern that these technologies may harm individuals. Social networking technologies have become an integral part of people’s daily lives.

According to Yang and Lin (2021), around 69% of persons in the United States will use at least one social networking site by 2021. The popularity of these sites has expanded, with Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat among the most popular. While social networking technology has brought people closer together, it has also been associated with negative consequences for individuals. I believe that exaggerated use of social networking technology hurts individuals because it leads to addiction, damages mental health, and hinders people’s efforts to socialize.

Social Networking Can Cause Addiction in Humans

Addiction is the first reason heavy usage of social networking technologies negatively impacts individuals. Social networking services are designed to be addictive, keeping users engaged for as long as possible. According to Lin et al. (2022), persons who use social networking sites excessively exhibit the same psychiatric signs as drug addicts. This addiction may lead to a decrease in productivity, which can negatively impact the individual’s life.

Social networking platforms are designed to be addictive, with features such as notifications and endless scrolling that keep users engaged for extended periods (Kiburu et al., 2021). The constant flow of information and updates may trigger the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward, which can lead to feelings of satisfaction and happiness. Nevertheless, this transient sensation of satisfaction can quickly morph into addiction-like behaviors in which users are urged to constantly check their social media accounts for new notifications or updates.

Negative Effects on Mental Health

Secondly, the widespread usage of social networking technology has a damaging influence on individuals, in that it hurts mental health. Depression, anxiety, and tension can all be caused by social networking sites (Luo, 2021). The more time people spent on social media, the more likely they were to experience anxiety, despair, and loneliness, according to a study by Akram and Kumar (2018). This can have long-term consequences for a person’s mental health and well-being.

Furthermore, social media platforms are frequently used to compare one to others, which can lead to elevated sentiments of envy and jealousy (Akram & Kumar, 2018). The persistent demand for affirmation and comparison can create a poisonous loop that adds to a person’s mental health degradation. Additionally, social media use can lead to addictive habits that interfere with people’s daily lives, including employment and relationships (Kolhar et al., 2021). The harmful influence of social networking technologies on mental health should not be overlooked, and actions should be taken to counteract its impacts.

Negative Impact on Social Life

The third reason widespread usage of social networking technology has an unfavorable influence on humans is that it might severely impact how people socialize. People can connect easily on social networking sites, which may lead to a decline in face-to-face communication skills. According to Aichner et al. (2021), using social networking sites is associated with a decrease in empathy. This can make it more difficult for people to understand and relate to others in real life.

Moreover, users of social networking sites are often encouraged to present an idealized version of themselves rather than their true selves (Chen & Xiao, 2022). A culture of comparison and competition may result from this, harming people’s social interactions. A person’s worry, envy, and feelings of inadequacy can be exacerbated by the constant comparison to others on social media, which also has harmful impacts on social life and its consequences for overall well-being. Furthermore, the ease of connection via social media can disrupt the balance between work and personal life, causing individuals to feel constantly connected and unable to detach and relax, resulting in burnout and increased stress levels.

Counterargument

One argument against the thesis that excessive social networking technology is detrimental to people is that social media can provide a sense of community and social support, which can be beneficial for mental health (Sharma et al., 2020). One could also argue that social media has facilitated the emergence of significant social movements and acts of activism (Yang & Lin, 2022). Although these counterarguments are somewhat valid, they do not alter the fact that using social media often has harmful effects.

It is essential to recognize that social media can be both beneficial and detrimental, and that the negative consequences that can occur when people overuse it cannot be ignored (Gunasekeran et al., 2022). Although social media can help people connect and get involved in meaningful ways, its effects on mental health and social behavior should not be overlooked. Similarly, one can derive the benefits of social media without encountering its drawbacks if they use it in moderation and take breaks when needed.

While social networking technology has beneficial impacts, such as allowing people to connect with others, its negative repercussions cannot be overlooked. The addictive nature of social networking sites can lead to a loss of productivity and hurt a person’s life (Barrot & Acomular, 2022). Individuals’ mental health might suffer long-term consequences as a result of the disadvantageous effects on mental health. Furthermore, the convenience of interacting on social media may reduce individuals’ abilities to communicate in person, negatively affecting their social skills.

Conclusion

In conclusion, people’s significant use of technology for social networking has impacted them in various ways. Social media’s negative impacts on mental health and social behavior cannot be disregarded, even though some people say that social media brings positives, such as connecting individuals from all over the world and offering a forum for social activism. In my opinion, the harmful impacts of social media can be mitigated by educating users on how to use social media responsibly and fostering healthy interactions beyond online platforms.
