Internet Privacy

Millions of people use the internet on a daily basis. The internet enables people to access a vast amount of data. Internet helps in bridging the gap of space and time. A significant number of people use the internet for fun. The ability of the internet to bridge the gap of space and time enables the internet to have applications in various industries.

Social media is one of the most recent developments of the internet. Social media enables people to keep in touch with their friends regardless of the distance between people. However, the ability of the internet to provide information to an unlimited number of people necessitates it to have security measures that limit the availability of certain information to unwarranted people. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Myspace are some of the recent social network sites. The lack of privacy is one of the major limitations of the internet. However, people may take certain measures to improve the security of the information they provide on the internet.

Social networking sites enable people to connect. However, if one provides information in the social network sites, the information is visible to anyone. The lack of security privacy of social networking sites allows anyone who can access the internet to see the information that other people provide. The lack of privacy is the price that people pay for using the free service of social networking sites. When an individual posts certain information on social networking sites, the information becomes a property of the social networking sites.

Social networking sites are primarily businesses. Therefore, they must have income generating activities. The social networking sites may use the information that their users provide to earn an income. The social networking sites may send information to third parties for income generating purposes. The terms of service of social networking sites allow the companies to own the information that users provide on the sites. However, most people do not read the terms of service carefully when signing up on various sites.

This enables internet sites to exploit the ignorance of their users. Most internet sites provide the terms of service in a language that is not easily comprehensible. The lack of privacy increases the probability to identify theft by fraudsters. Despite the lack of security on the internet, the importance of the internet in the day-to-day activities of most people makes it impossible for people to avoid using the internet.

Even though there is a lack of security on the internet, internet users have the obligation of ensuring that they take measures that increase their security. Internet users willingly sign up for sites that state that they own the information that their users provide. Also, internet sites are primarily businesses. Therefore, internet sites must devise means of generating income using the information that their users provide.

Inability to earn an income would lead to the ultimate collapse of internet sites. A very small percentage of people know how to increase their security. Various social networking sites have security tools that enable their users to limit the information that other people may view. The proper use of security tools increases the security of information that internet users provide. Also, internet users should ensure that they do not provide information that compromises their security.
