The two discussion posts acknowledge the existence of the gun policy in the United States. However, the way this information is presented in the discussion differs significantly. The other student’s post only indicates that gun control and legislation are controversial without mentioning where it is contained in the constitution. My post mentions the second amendment, which outlines the right to own and regulate guns. Both discussion posts confirm that the high number of individuals owning guns in the United States is associated with an increased rate of gun-related violence and crimes (Prickett et al., 2018; Kolbe, 2020). However, my discussion provides statistical evidence, noting the association of 70% murder and 40% robbery assaults with guns (Kolbe, 2020). Therefore, while owning a gun is a constitutional right, it requires regulation to minimize problems associated with it.
Both discussion posts support the implementation of legal control measures to regulate circulation lawful and unlawful gun markets in the United States. The regulations will reduce the possibility of selling firearms to potentially dangerous individuals (Worrall, 2018). Nevertheless, the two discussions provide different alternatives to minimizing gun-related violence and crimes. The other student’s post proposes stringent policies that ensure individuals convicted of gun-related crimes surrender their firearms. The post also emphasizes the need for the agency that licenses gun ownership to effectively screen potential sellers and buyers before giving the license. Conversely, my discussion post proposes a policy that will ensure that licensed firearm manufacturers install additional safety mechanisms in their guns to alleviate the possibility of accidental shootings in private and public places. Additionally, the post supports the introduction of regulation for identity verification in gun sales.
